PTSD Episodes

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a deeply traumatic event — such as combat, sexual assault, a serious accident, natural disaster, or childhood abuse — and is characterized by symptoms including intrusive flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, avoidance of triggers, and difficulty regulating mood and relationships. While the clinical designation remains "disorder," a growing movement among veterans, first responders, trauma survivors, and some mental health professionals advocates for reframing it as post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI). The reasoning behind this shift is both practical and philosophical: the word "disorder" implies something is fundamentally broken or abnormal within the person, which can carry stigma and discourage people from seeking help, whereas "injury" acknowledges that PTSD is a natural and predictable response to an abnormal and overwhelming experience — much like a physical wound sustained in the line of duty or through no fault of one's own. Proponents argue that just as a broken bone is an injury that can heal with proper treatment, a traumatically stressed brain and nervous system can also recover given the right support, and that the language of injury conveys both the legitimacy of the suffering and the genuine possibility of recovery. This reframing has gained particular traction within military and first-responder communities, where the stigma associated with the word "disorder" has historically been a significant barrier to individuals asking for the care they need.
